PREFACE
The present is the eleventh volume of Nottinghamshire Parish Registers, and includes a series of six marriage registers from the north part of Broxtowe Wapentake. These are ieweT than in former volumes, but the population of several of the villages included is much greater than the average of the parishes whose registers have already been printed. Thanks are due to the parish clergy who have permitted their registers to be printed. With the exception of Skegbv, for which Miss M. A. Dodsley has been responsible, all the registers in the present volume have been transcribed by Mr. G. G. Bonser. ^ 'll^Q'^ 1 C^
The entries, as before, have been reduced to a common form, and the following abbreviations adopted : —
w. = widower or widow. d. = daughter of.
s. = spinster, single woman, p. = of the parish of.
or son. dice. = in the diocese of.
b. = bachelor or single man. co. = in the county of
f.w.k. — frame-work-knitter. He. = marriage licence.
The spelling of the surnames is in all cases the same as in the original registers, but the Christian names have in most cases been translated or modernised.
It must be remembered that these printed abstracts of marriage registers are not "evidence" in the technical sense. Certified copies must still be obtained when evidence of a marriage is needed for proving a pedigree in a court of law, or when registering it at Heralds' College. For such certificates appli- cation must be made to the clergy in charge of the original registers.
It should be borne in mind that previous to 1752 the years were calculated as beginning on the 25th of March, so that a
VI
marriage entered as having taken place on, say, the 20th of February, 1624, really occurred on that day in 1625 according to our reckoning. This is sometimes expressed by "162^" or 1624-5.
No index is issued with the volume, as the Editors believe that it is better to print as many registers as possible, and to defer index-making until the registers still in manuscript are placed beyond the risk of loss.
The next volume is already partly printed, and will contain parishes in Thurgarton Wapentake.

Marriages at Eastwood,
171 I to 181 2.
Note. — The Reg"isters of this Parish commence in 171 1 and are 12 inches by si inches, are of parchment with parchment covered boards. They are in excellent condition and fine handwriting. The first entry records that "The old Registers of christenings, "marriages & burials of the parish of Eastwood in the county " of Nottingham, being lost in the burning of my parsonage " house the 2nd day of June, 171 1, this year begun by me, Peter " Lalouel, Rector of the said Parish." On the cover is an
entry that Sarah , late of this Parish, was excommunicated
1718. It is remarkable that the name of the Parish is spelt in so many different ways by the Registrar, Eastwood in 171 1, Easwood and Eastwith in 1753, Estw.iyle in i76g, Estwaite in 1783, and Estwayte in 1784.
Volume II. is of parchment, 12 inches by 6^, bound in calf. It commences: "The Register of Easwood or Eastwith in the county of Nottingham, 1752, New Style." It contains nothing of much interest. One entry in 1762 is to the effect that no affidavit was received that Mary Whiting was buried in Woollen according to a late Act of Parliament, and on the inside of cover a Memo, to the effect that Robert and Samuel Granger were Churchwardens in 1782.
Volume III. is of paper, gi inches by yh, and is in the form prescribed. It commences December, 1754, and finishes December, 1781.
Volume IV. is of paper, bound in calf, and of the same size as Volume III. It commences in 1782 and concludes in 1798.
Volume V. is of paper, bound in calf, 15 inches by 95, and in the form prescribed by the Act 26 George II., commences in 1798 and ends in 1812.
The Registers have been transcribed by Mr. G. G. Bonser, and collated by the Revd. A. H. Plumptre, the Rector, by whose permission they are now published.

Marriages at Selston,
1559 to 1812.
Note.— Vol. I. of the Selston Registers is i2f ins. tall by 6 ins. across, and is the Transcript of 1603, all the entries up to 1612 being in the same hand. It is in good condition^ except the two first leaves, which are damaged at the edges, and the covers are all but destroyed. It has 56 entire and two half leaves, and on the last page but two is written : " Memora. that theire is but 53 " leaves in this book when it was delivered to William Wood, being " Churchwarden, 1631. William Fox, Robert Poole, Richard " Claye." It is clear that some leaves must have been inserted, especially as there are 9 entries in 1633, 7 in 1634, 7 in 1635, 9 in 1636, 2 in 1647, before the Memo.
Both Baptisms and Marriages commence in 1557, Burials in 1558. They are very interesting and contain several entries peculiarly so, and they have been transferred to these columns although they do not relate to Marriages. It is most probable that Henry Denham, who last signs in 1641, was ejected from the Living by the Commonwealth Board of Tryers. There are nearly two blank pages between the Weddings of 1636 and 1641, and no entries from then till 1653, when an interesting one appears, for which the reader is referred to that date.
Volume II. is 105 inches high and 6 inches across, and is of parchment. It contains entries of Baptisms and Burials only. The back has had a large part eaten away by mice and there are no entries of interest, except that a whole page is taken up by an entry in large hand as follows : " 1662. William Pearson, Vicar, " Richard Clarke, Richard Lawrence, Churchwardens," from which it would appear that the Revdr Chas. Jackson was ejected by the Act of Uniforrnity, he being a Presbyterian. " A great Snow " on 30 Nov., 1658, is recorded. There are only 11 leaves and the entries run from 1654 to 1659.
Volume III. is i2| inches high and 6J inches across, and is of parchment. Of one leaf only about a square inch remains, there are 11 leaves complete. It commences in 1669 and concludes in 1689. An interesting entry as to the Burial of " Ferdinando " Babbington, rightful heir to their estates, &c., &c.," is crossed out.
What may be called a Volume consists of 6 loose leaves of parchment with ragged edges, but well written, though with no regard to sequence in dates. The earliest entrv is in 1684 and the last 1693. The most interesting entry is the baptism of James Clarke, whose parents are entered as "citizens of London." Notts.— XI. n
1 8 Nottinghamshire Parish Registers. [1557
Volume V. is 15I inches tall and si inches across, commences in i6g4 and closes in 1736. It is in excellent condition and well written. The following interesting entry appears under date 8 Nov., i7cg : "Sam., son of Jonathan Clee . . . baptis'd in a Barn " upon Dove Green by a Dissenting Teacher."
Volume VI. is of parchment, 125 inches tall and 7 inches across, and is bound in calf covered boards. A note in the cover states that it was " bought att an auction, paid 2s. 8d.," John Cooper being Vicar at the time. It commences with Burials in 1735-6 and finishes with Baptisms of 1786. Two pages at the end of the Register seem to have been reserved with the intention of keeping Baptisms by Dissenting Ministers together, 11 of the 15 entries being children of Richard and Mary Clark.
Volume VIII. is the form prescribed by the Act of 26 George II., A.D. 1753, is of parchment, and commences 1754 and closes 1790.
Volume IX. is of parchment bound in calf, commences on 6 Dec, 17Q0, and the last entry is on the 30 Dec, 1812.
These Marriages have been transcribed by Mr. G- G. Bonser, and are now printed by permission of the Rev. C. Harrison, the Vicar, who has also collated them with the originals.
